Material Guide
Natural depth. Modern performance.
01 Quartzite
What It Is
Quartzite is formed from sandstone under intense heat and pressure, resulting in one of the hardest natural stone options available. Its appearance closely resembles marble, offering beauty with greater resilience.
Durability
- Among the hardest natural stone options — highly scratch resistant
- Excellent heat resistance for everyday kitchen use
- Porous — requires annual sealing to prevent moisture absorption
- One of the more expensive countertop options due to longer fabrication time
Maintenance
- Seal annually or as needed
- Clean routinely with mild soap and warm water
- Address spills promptly to avoid absorption and discoloration
Stubborn stains may require a baking soda poultice. Download the Poultice Instructions sheet for step-by-step guidance.
Download Poultice Instructions02 Granite
What It Is
Granite is formed from cooled magma deep within the earth, producing unique interlocking mineral patterns in every slab. No two pieces are identical, making each countertop one of a kind.
Durability
- Very hard — highly resistant to scratching under normal use
- Heat resistant — hot pans may be placed directly on the surface
- Porous by nature — requires annual sealing to prevent staining
- Lighter-colored granites may require more frequent sealing
Maintenance
- Clean with mild soap and warm water
- Avoid acidic cleaners such as vinegar or bleach-based products
- Exercise caution with acidic foods and ingredients during food preparation
- Address spills promptly to prevent absorption and discoloration
Stubborn stains may require a baking soda poultice. Download the Poultice Instructions sheet for step-by-step guidance.

What It Is
Quartz is an engineered stone manufactured in a controlled environment, resulting in consistent color, pattern, and performance. It is one of the most popular countertop choices for its low maintenance and high durability.
Durability
- Highly resistant to scratches and stains under everyday use
- Nonporous — does not require annual sealing
- Resin surface can be damaged by prolonged heat — always use trivets
Maintenance
- No sealing required
- Clean with mild soap and warm water or a stone-safe cleaner
- Always use trivets or hot pads — high heat can scorch the resin surface
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbers
Printed quartz mimics natural stone with realistic veining.
04 Porcelain
What It Is
Porcelain is made from a ceramic base with a high-resolution stone image fired onto the surface. It is one of the most durable and low-maintenance countertop options available.
Durability
- Extremely hard — highly resistant to scratches and heat
- Nonporous — will not stain, absorb moisture, or harbor bacteria
- UV stable — color will not fade with sun exposure
- Available in thinner profiles, ideal for showers, backsplashes, and fireplaces
Maintenance
- No sealing required
- Clean with any standard household cleaner
- Heat and scratch resistant for everyday use
Natural Stoneworks does not source 6mm or 9mm porcelain slabs due to fragility during transport and fabrication.
05 Marble
What It Is
Marble is prized for its elegance and timeless aesthetic. It is softer and more porous than granite, and is considered a “living finish” — it develops a natural patina over time.
Durability
- Softer than granite and quartzite — more vulnerable to scratches and etching
- Porous — requires annual sealing to resist staining
- Acidic substances can etch the surface if not wiped promptly
Maintenance
- Seal annually
- Clean with mild dish soap, warm water, and a damp microfiber cloth
- Avoid all acidic cleaners
- Use trivets, cutting boards, and place mats
- Address spills immediately
Marble is best suited for customers committed to attentive care who appreciate a surface that evolves naturally with age.
06 Soapstone
What It Is
Soapstone has a soft, silky feel and a distinctive matte appearance. Unlike most natural stones, it is nonporous and does not require annual sealing.
Durability
- Soft compared to granite and quartzite — susceptible to scratches and nicks
- Nonporous — naturally resistant to staining, bacteria, and acids
- Excellent heat resistance
Maintenance
- No annual sealing required
- Apply mineral oil and soapstone wax periodically to restore color
- Use cutting boards to protect against surface scratches
- Clean with mild soap and water as needed
Some customers find that scratches and nicks give soapstone character over time.
